What Are the different Types of Paint Finishes?

There are five types of paint finishes generally speaking: flat, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, and high-gloss. They range from no shine to very shiny, and each one behaves differently on your walls in terms of durability, washability, and how well it hides imperfections.
In Muskoka homes—especially cottages with shifting humidity—finish choice makes a big difference. Some sheens highlight every drywall flaw, while others help mask uneven mudding or older plaster common in local builds.
Here’s what you need to know about each paint finish
Flat / Matte: No shine at all, excellent at hiding imperfections, but the least washable. Best for ceilings, adult bedrooms, or older walls that need forgiveness.
Eggshell: A soft, low-lustre finish with noticeably better durability than flat. Great for living rooms and bedrooms where you want a clean look without too much reflection.
Satin: A light sheen that’s tough and easy to wipe down. Ideal for Muskoka hallways, family rooms, and areas where sand, lake water, or cottage traffic tend to bump the walls.
Semi-Gloss: Shiny, moisture-resistant, and durable. Best for kitchens, bathrooms, trim, and doors—anywhere humidity and frequent cleaning are a factor.
High-Gloss: Very reflective and extremely durable. Used sparingly on trim, doors, or cabinets when you want a dramatic, polished look. Every surface flaw will show, so prep matters.
Choosing the right sheen can make or break the final result. When in doubt, eggshell on walls and semi-gloss on trim is a safe, professional-standard combo in Muskoka homes.
